Marla Smith
Born in Dallas and raised by a musician (Kay) and a politician\attorney (Dick), Marla grew up with an appreciation of both the poetic and the practical sides of life. Leaving Texas in 1986, she earned a B.A. in Architectural History at the University of Virginia. Returning to Texas in 1993, she earned her Masters of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin.
Since graduation, Marla has taught full time at UT, while maintaining a private design and rendering practice. She has taught Technical Communication, Advanced Design, Digital Representation, Visual Communications, and Design II. She has worked as a sole practitioner as well as with various architects and designers including Richard Dodge, Jill Nokes, Rhode:Hurt and Miro Rivera. Both her teaching and design work focus on the balance between the artistic and the technical, the idea and the building, the need with the desire. |
