When I moved into my 1930’s bungalow 11 years ago, I knew that the first thing I would do was remodel the kitchen. It was a tiny galley kitchen with cabinets that didn’t close, country chicken wallpaper, and all original fixtures including the original 1930’s stove. The stove was charming, but it was also an uninsulated metal box that only cooked at one temperature. But I didn’t remodel the kitchen, and over the years I gradually stopped cooking and started eating out. I’d seen Christy’s work at the homes of mutual friends, and she had consulted with me on several “false starts” to my kitchen project. When I finally admitted I needed a working kitchen, I knew that she would create a design that was functional, affordable, and beautiful.
To be honest, I have very little interest or aptitude at design. I’m a single mom who was running my own business at the time. I didn’t want to spend my weekends shopping for kitchen faucets and I’ve never picked up a design magazine in my life. Christy guided me by the hand through the entire process. She brought in Jason Williams, of Shoal Creek Construction, who gave me a realistic budget and an honest assessment of the work that needed to be done. When I had to scale my budget back, they worked with me to adjust the design and scope of work without batting an eye. Christy always supported my preferences, but also gave me clear recommendations (who knew that you actually had to decide where to put the button for the disposal?). Working on an old house always comes with surprises, but they talked me through every change of plans in an honest and upfront way. Christy and Jason’s attention to detail and commitment to quality far surpassed my own, to tell the truth. The extra bonus? Jason's crew was delightful. I was even serenaded with “The Ballad of Pancho and Lefty” one morning when they thought I’d already left the house. (Sadly, when I chimed in for the chorus, the singing immediately stopped.) I live in a 900 square foot house, and I was actually sad to see them go when the project came to an end. If I’d known how painless the remodeling process would be, and how beautiful the results would be, I would’ve done this project ten years ago. My kitchen is absolutely gorgeous!
